The Ministry of Health, working with the American Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are rolling out, in selected areas, a patient smart card system, so that patients can carry their own medical records with them when visiting clinics. These are then read by smart-card readers. At present they are not connected to any central service, and data is collected by the transfer of memory sticks, but there is an obvious application for connectivity as it reaches more rural areas.
